Behavioral Experiments

Behavioral experiments in CBT involve testing the accuracy of a person’s beliefs or assumptions by conducting real-world experiments. This technique is used to challenge cognitive distortions and automatic thoughts by encouraging individuals to observe what happens when they behave in a way that contradicts their negative expectations. For example, someone with social anxiety may believe they will be judged harshly in social situations. A behavioral experiment would involve engaging in a social situation and noting whether the feared outcome actually occurs. These experiments help individuals gather evidence against their negative beliefs, reinforcing healthier thinking patterns.
