Cognitive Distortions

Cognitive distortions are irrational or exaggerated thought patterns that reinforce negative emotions and behaviors. Examples of cognitive distortions include catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, and overgeneralization. In CBT, individuals learn to identify these distortions and challenge them to develop healthier thinking patterns. Recognizing and addressing cognitive distortions is a crucial part of therapy, helping to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues by promoting more balanced and rational thought processes.
